Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, Ardèche, France

This may no longer be a hidden gem, but my first visit to Vallon-Pont-d’Arc was still a memorable start to our Riviera journey.

We visited in late July, so the area was busy with tourists. Even so, we found a tent pitch at Le Camp des Gorges, which turned out to be an excellent choice. It felt quieter and more private than the larger, more crowded campsites along the Ardèche River.

Kayaking is the area’s signature activity, and rental options are available through many campsites and hotels. We booked through our campsite. Just before setting off, I found myself wondering what the experience must have felt like 20 years earlier, before the area became so popular. Even today, though, the scale and beauty of the landscape still feel liberating and unforgettable.

Kayaking Options

There are several route options for kayaking. We chose the shorter route, starting upstream and finishing shortly after passing beneath the famous natural arch, close to our campsite. The longer option continues downstream to St. Martin, where the rental company collects you and drives you back to the centre.

Dinner

We had dinner at Restaurant Les Trois Eaux, which is attached to the campsite. The manager was warm and enthusiastic, although service was a little slow because the restaurant was full. Still, once we settled into the holiday pace, the evening became very enjoyable. The setting and décor fit beautifully with the surrounding nature while still feeling refined enough for a proper dinner.

Tip

The downstream section is said to be less crowded, and there are also a couple of campsites there if you prefer a quieter base.
