I love fortunetellers and I love seafood. I think that was why I liked Mermaid Inn in New York so much. Mermaid Inn has three branches in New York and I was in the East Village branch to enjoy the perfect seafood and the nice wine there. And when you are finished with your dinner, you get a free fortune telling fish. For the new comers like me: this is a fish made of thin plastic film that takes various shapes with the warmth of your hands. And the shape shows your personality or your future.
The service is excellent: the waiters are helpful and pay high attention (but it is not exaggerated), you also get some nice suggestions about wine or the menu. The tables are a bit small but sufficient for two. The decor could be a little bit fancier, maybe. It is chic but narrowly spaced.
Mermaid Inn offers a satisfying menu that covers foods like shrimps, lobster, clams or oysters. We ended up choosing steamed pei mussels, lobster sandwich, shrimp&avocado sandwich and crab cocktail that comes on ice cubes. And we did not regret our choice. The mussels were cooked in a delicious garlic sauce that I enjoyed them very much. The crab cocktail in a martini glass was also pleasing. The sandwiches were prepared rather as small burgers and it was a real joy to hold them in our fingers while tasting our wine. We ordered a Pinot Blanc from Alsace and it really matched well with the food, but I found the wines a little overpriced. The prices are a little higher considering New York averages, but are still not that expensive. And the dessert is served for free.
You will for sure find something that will suit your own taste if you are really looking for a very nice dinner with good sea food, good wine, good service and pleasing atmosphere.
